My Furnace Won’t Turn On. What Should I Do?
If your furnace won’t start, follow these troubleshooting steps before calling for professional help:
Check Your Thermostat
- Ensure it is set to “heat” and the temperature is high enough to activate the furnace.
- Replace the batteries if the thermostat is unresponsive.
Inspect the Power Supply
- Look for a tripped breaker in your electrical panel or a blown fuse.
- Reset the breaker or replace the fuse if necessary.
- Verify that the furnace’s power switch (usually near the unit) is turned on.
Examine the Furnace Filter
- A clogged filter can restrict airflow and cause the system to shut down.
- Remove the filter and hold it up to the light—if no light passes through, replace it.
Check the Pilot Light or Ignition System (For Gas Furnaces)
- For older models with a pilot light, check if it has gone out. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to relight it safely.
- For electronic ignition systems, look for dirt or debris that may be obstructing ignition.
Ensure Vents and Registers Are Open
- Blocked or closed vents can cause the furnace to overheat and shut down unexpectedly.
- Make sure all vents are open and unobstructed for proper airflow.
If these troubleshooting steps don’t resolve the issue, it may be time to contact Ideal Partners for professional diagnosis and repair. Attempting more advanced troubleshooting could pose safety risks or further complicate the problem.
