How Do Heat Pumps Work?
Heat pumps operate by transferring heat from one place to another, utilizing a refrigeration cycle to provide both heating and cooling. The process begins with the use of a refrigerant, a special fluid that changes states between liquid and gas depending on the surrounding temperature and pressure. When in heating mode, the heat pump extracts heat from the outside air, ground, or a water source, even in cold weather, and amplifies it before delivering it indoors. This is achieved through components like the evaporator coil, compressor, and condenser, which work together to absorb and release heat efficiently.
The cycle starts with the refrigerant in the evaporator coil absorbing heat from the outdoor environment. This causes the refrigerant to evaporate and turns it into a low-pressure gas. The compressor then increases the pressure of the gas, which also raises its temperature. The heated refrigerant passes through the condenser coil located indoors, where it releases the captured heat into the interior space. The indoor unit distributes this heat, warming the home effectively. Meanwhile, the refrigerant cools down, returns to a liquid state, and is cycled back to repeat the process.
When cooling, the process is reversed. The refrigerant absorbs heat from the indoor air and releases it outside. The same components work in tandem, but the flow of heat changes direction. By utilizing a reversing valve, the heat pump can efficiently alternate between heating and cooling modes depending on the desired indoor temperature. This dual functionality makes heat pumps versatile and energy-efficient for year-round climate control.
