My Heat Pump Won’t Start. What Should I Do?
If your heat pump won't turn on, there are a few basic troubleshooting steps you can take before reaching out to a professional for repairs. First, check your thermostat settings to confirm they are properly configured. Your thermostat should be set to the desired temperature and the correct mode – heating or cooling, depending on your needs. Incorrect settings are a common oversight and can prevent your heat pump from functioning as intended. If your thermostat uses batteries, replace them if they are old or depleted, as this can also disrupt operations.
Next, inspect the power supply to your unit. Verify that your heat pump is plugged in securely and that the circuit breaker or fuse box hasn't been tripped. Power surges or disruptions may cause the breaker to trip, cutting power to your system. Flip the breaker off and back on to reset it if necessary. If your heat pump has a dedicated on/off switch, confirm that it is in the "on" position.
After ruling out power and thermostat issues, examine the outdoor unit of your heat pump. Check for visible obstructions like leaves, branches, or debris that may be blocking the fan or surrounding vents. A blocked unit can prevent the heat pump from starting properly. Clear away any debris to promote optimal airflow and allow the system to attempt a startup.
